Goal Setting With Our Kids

j
One of the most rewarding things as a parent is watching our kids take ownership of their own growth.
Last week, my 13-year-old daughter opened up about wanting to do better and be better.
She shared that she was feeling held back in certain areas and was searching for solutions to overcome them.
When she bravely mentioned that she had some goals in mind, I was stoked that I could get to support her on this journey.
Over the weekend, we sat down together to explore her ideas.
The first step was helping her brain dump everything she wanted and needed, no matter how big or small. It was amazing to see her ideas come to life and evolve as we worked through them.

The page started out blank, but in no time, it was covered with thoughts, plans, and aspirations. Seeing everything laid out visually really helped her connect with what she wanted to achieve.

We discussed why these things were important to her, so she could have a strong reason to draw on whenever she feels like slipping.
Next, we focused on the areas where she felt held back and brainstormed solutions together. Whether it was finding ways to better manage her time, seeking additional resources, or even building new habits, we came up with practical steps she felt that she could take to overcome those challenges.
Then, we categorised her needs and desires, determining whether additional support or resources were required—whether it be help from an adult or something as simple as a new water bottle to track hydration.
We then turned those ideas into clear goals. I made sure to encourage her to use words that resonated with her, guiding her gently but allowing her to put her own voice to her aspirations.
After some reflection, she now has clear intentions that she’s excited to work toward.
Seeing her take ownership of her growth and set her own path has been one of the most rewarding experiences as a parent and I’m so proud of her.

Supporting Our Kids' Goals: The Power of Follow-Through as Parents
As parents, our role doesn’t stop at celebrating their intentions; it’s about being there to support the journey ahead.
One of the most important things we can do is follow up with our kids on the goals they’ve set. It’s easy for anyone, especially our young ones, to feel overwhelmed or lose momentum without guidance and encouragement.
That’s where we step in.
We sat down together to review her progress, discussing what went well and where she needed a bit more support. From there, we crafted a new action plan for the week ahead, making sure it felt manageable.
Checking in regularly not only helps them stay on track but also shows them that you’re invested in their growth. It’s a chance to celebrate the wins, talk through the challenges, and adjust the plan if needed.
Being an active participant in their journey helps build their confidence and reinforces the belief that they can achieve what they set out to do.
